Chapter 17 Flashcards
Morphs:
- The different physical forms a trait may have. Long necks and short necks are examples of morphs.
Polymorphic:
- A trait that exists in several different morphs is polymorphic.
Species:
A group of organisms with simulator morphological features, which can interbreed to produce fertile offspring and are reproductively isolated from other species.
Organisms:
Living things that are capable of reacting to stimuli, reproduction, growth, and homeostasis.
Genetic Drift:
Change in allele frequency that occurs be chance, because only some of the organisms reproduce.
- founders effect; small population isolated and have different selection pressures, allele frequencies chance hence causing genetic drift and evolution of this population.
Genetic variation:
Diversity of the alleles within the genes in the genome of a single species.
Variation:
is all the differences which exist between members of the same species.
There are two kinds of variation: Continuous and discontinuous.
Ecology:
- The branch of biology dealing with the relations and interactions between organisms and their environment, including other organisms.
Biodiversity:
- Eco/specie/ genetic variation in species.
Ecosystem:
- A relatively self contained, interacting community of organisms, and the environgens in which they live and with which they interact.
Habitat
- A locality in which an organism lives.
Niche:
- Role of organisms in ecosystem, how an organism’s fits into the system
- Describes that how organism interacts, how it obtain energy, how it interacts with other organisms etc.
Kangaroos in Australia, Zebra in savannah.
Population:
A community of animals, plants, or humans among whose members interbreeding occurs.
Community:
All of the populations of all the different species within a specified area at particular time.
Species Diversity
- The number of species in a community is known as species richness.
- S. D. Takes richness into account ur also includes evenness of abundance of each species.
- 2 points that need to be found: Distribution and abundance.
