Q
Problems with CF
A
Creates sticky mucus that lines tubes and ducts in gas exchange digestive and reproductive systems. Increased change of infections Less efficient gas exchange Cilia cannot move Diffusion is difficult
1
Q
Cystic fibrosis is caused by?
A
Mutations of the CFTR protein
2
Q
What happens to the pancreatic duct in CF
A
It becomes blocked by sticky mucus inhibiting the release of digestive enzymes
3
Q
CF can be associated with diabetes why?
A
Cell walls of pancreas is damaged which produce insulin
4
Q
What happens to the water content in a CF patient?
A
As the CFTR protein is not functioning the Na channel is permanently open so water is continually removed from the mucus by osmosis.
5
Q
What is CFTR protein responsible for?
A
CFTR is a carrier protein, it transports chloride ions out of the cells and into the mucus, thus causing water to move into the mucus by osmosis.
