genetic code Flashcards
1
Q
what is the genetic code?
A
the code for the sequence of amino acids
2
Q
what does ‘triplet code’ mean?
A
- the code is a sequence of 3 bases called a codon
- each codon codes for 1 amino acid
- sequence of codons = gene
3
Q
what does ‘universal’ mean?
A
used by all organisms
4
Q
what does ‘degenerate’ mean?
A
- 64 codons possible
- 20 amino acids
- more codons than amino acids so many amino acids have more than one codon
5
Q
what does ‘non overlapping’ mean?
A
each base sequence is only read once
