Genes and patterns of inheritance Flashcards
Genotype
The genetic make-up of an organism, made up of alleles that determine a particular trait
Phenotype
the outward appearance of an individual in terms of the trait under consideration
Mendels first law
the 2 alleles of each gene separate during meiosis, with only one entering each gamete
Monohybrid inheritance
The inheritance of the alleles of a single gene at a gene locus
Gene
a section of DNA which codes for a particular protein. They are located on chromosomes
Alleles
Different forms of the same gene. In diploid organisms, they are located the same locus on homologous chromosomes
Codominance
Both alleles are expressed as neither dominates the other
Mendels second law
Each member of an allelic pair may combine randomly with either of another pair
Epistasis
When one gene modifies or interferes with the action of another gene
