Genes and Inheritance Flashcards
Gene
A piece of DNA with specific sequence of bases that codes for a protein resulting in a characteristic
Locus
Position of a gene on a chromosome
Allele
different version of a gene
Homologous chromosomes
similar chromosomes that form a pair of chromosomes
Dominant allele
Effect is always shown, only 1 copy need
Recessive allele
Only shown when alleles are homozygous
Carrier
individual who is heterozygous so carries the recessive allele
Heterozygous
Two different alleles of a gene
Homozygous
Alleles of the genes are identical
Genotype
Alleles a person has
Phenotype
Characteristics from genes and environment
Incomplete dominance
Dominant isn’t always shown over the recessive trait so both alleles influence phenotype
Whats the formula for chi - squared value?
(O-E)2/ E
Whats the null hypothesis?
no difference between observed and expected
How do work out the critical value?
From table - 0.05 probability, degree of freedom - number of phenotypes - 1
