Genes and Behavior Flashcards
Genotype
What genes say
Phenotype
What is manifested physically
Circadian rhythms in fruit flies
per & tim
Obesity in mice
leptin
Clumping vs solitary in C elegans
NPY
Imprinting
Genes expression is determined by the parent that contributed them
Epigenetics
Tags you get in the womb that turn on or off genes. Methyl groups
Prader-Willi
Child receives abnormal chromosome from father
Associated with obesity and psychiatric symptoms
Angelman Syndrome
Child receives abnormal chromosome from mother
Associated with mental retardation, epilepsy, absence of speech, hyperactivity, and inappropriate laughter
PKU
Child has two abnormal copies of a gene that codes for the enzyme. Children who dont eat proteins won’t have problems.
Common variant
Common mutations with small individual risk interact together to cause a disorder
Rare monogenic model
Many genes can cause a disorder. One mutation alone can cause a disorder, but they are extremely rare
