Genes Flashcards
Define genetics
branch of biology dealing with transmission of inherited characters from parent to child during fertilization.
Genes are
Factors that are passed down from one generation to another
*They are the carriers of blueprints for formation of cells, tissues, organs and ultimately the organism as a whole.
Different forms of each gene are called
Alleles
Genes are formed of
DNA(deoxyribonucleic acid)
Multiple genes are strung together containing long DNA chains to form structures called
Chromosomes
Genes are majorly involved in synthesis of
Proteins(made up of smaller units called amino acids)
*Differences in genes cause building of different amino acids and thereby different proteins. These differences lead to unique traits of an individual (hair, skin, eye colour, etc)
The nature and function of a cell depends upon the protein synthesized by it.
Gene gives potential for trait development.2 factors on which achievement of this potential partly depends on are
1) interaction between genes
2) interaction between gene and the environment
