Generic Flashcards
Define a hazard and risk
Hazard = something that has the potential to cause harm
Risk = likelihood of that hazard causing harm
Steps of risk assessment
- Identify the hazard
- Identify level of risk and to who
- Evaluate the risk - can it be reduced/controlled
- is it acceptable - Record
- Review and revise if necessary
Risks associated with physio assessment
> Manual handling - appropriate posture + training
Patient dignity - clothes/curtained
Patient well-being - trained to deal with situation
Patient confidentiality - appropriate surroundings
Emotional state - sensitive within scope
Professionalism - chaperone/consent
Treatment effectiveness - thorough/within scope
Malpractice - ethics
Working alone - elevated risk levels
Legal - expert opinion
Cross infection - appropriate ppe
IN GENERAL: PATIENT FIRST/ ETHICAL/WITHIN SCOPE
Things to do before assessment
- Risk assessment
- Read appropriate notes
- Get consent
- Ask for preferences on names etc.
- Begin assessment
Why choose an outcome measure
> Specific - patient population - problem - what we want to measure > context - time - surroundings - cost/equipment > valid (measures what we want) > reliable (reproducible)
Sensitivity vs. Specificity
Sensitivity
- able to detect condition
Specificity
- ability to rule out condition
