Genereal Flashcards
What is a hazard?
What’s a natural hazard
Something that is a potential threat to human life or property
Hazards chased by natural process
3 types of natural hazards and what they are
Geophysical - caused by land processes such as earthquakes
Atmospheric - caused by climatic process such as tropical storms and wildfires
Hydrological - caused by water movement such as floods and avalanches
What’s a disaster
When a hazard seriously affects humans
What’s risk
The likelihood that humans will be affected by the hazard
What’s vulnerability
How susceptible a population is to the damage caused by a hazard
5 things that affect perception of hazards
Wealth Religion Education Experience Personality
What does response success depend on
4
Hazard incidence - how often is occurs
Magnitude or intensity
Distribution
Level of development
What is the hazard management cycle
- Mitigation - aim to minimise the impacts of future disasters
- Preparedness - planning how to respond eg warning systems
- Response - how people react to disaster eg emergency services
- Recovery- Area affected getting back to normal
Park model
Shows phases of response to hazard
1- pre disaster 2- disruption 3- relief 4- rehabilitation 5- reconstruction - normal standard or better
Risk sharing
Is community preparedness with pre arranged measures to reduced loss of life and property smashes through public education, evacuation and emergency shelter and supplies
3 things affected perception of natural hazards
Fatalism - acceptance - remain there
Adaptation - prepare for event
Fear - move away from hazard to scary
