Generator effect Flashcards
What is the key difference between a generator and motor
IN MOTOR : Current goes in –> movement out
IN GENERATOR: movement in –> current out
What is the rule for the generator effect
Right hand rule
In the right hand what does the:
thumb
pointer finger
middle finger
each indicate
DIRECTION of
thumb = motion of wire
pointer = magnetic field
middle = current
What generates potential difference in a generator
the wire moving through magnetic field
OR
move magnets back and forth across the wire
IF NOTHING MOVING NO INDUCTION
What is it known as when you move wire through magnetic field
induction (generate potential difference)
How is the current produced alternating
one way through the wire its current goes one way
but as it goes the opposite way the current flips and goes the other.
I.E when direction of movement switches so does the direction of current
How can you increase size of induced voltage (3)
increase the number of coils in wire
increase power of the magnet
Increase speed wire moves through magnetic field
What is an alternator and how does it work
a generator which creates alternating current
it has two slip ring commutators that are connected to each side of the coil seperately
this means that every half turn when the wire changes side the current direction switches in the circuit
What is a dynamo and what current does it generate
a dynamo is the same as a dc motor but the coil is turned to generate a current
What do graphs look like for each (alternator and dynamo)
alternator is a graph going into negative and positive
whereas dynamo is graph going only positive but like lots og hills
