Generational Differences Flashcards
How are generational differences presented?
R&J used as a vehicle to bring attention to stark difference.
Elder generation fixated upon traditional views of love/honour (e.g. Lord Capulet sees as transactional/giving away possession)
Younger generation open-minded & changeable approach to these matters
Why has Shakespeare done this?
In hopes of bringing unity and understanding between generations within renaissance and contemporary audiences.
At the start of the play…
“I neither know it, nor can learn of him” (emphasises difference, does not attempt to talk about emotions due to societal expectations of a father)
“It is an honour I dream not of” (no intention)
“I was your mother much upon these years” (married young, shames Juliet & pressures based on societal expectations/experience)
As the play progresses…
“Be patient, for the world is broad and wide”
“There is no world without Verona walls”
Looking for other opportunities vs confining self to one love
“doth she not give us thanks?” (believes they should be thanked for providing husband with good social standing, however does not take bride’s feelings into account - emphasises differing views to important life decisions (support of traditional love))
Towards the end of the play…
“Romeo’s a dishclout to him” (in trying to present Paris in positive light goes too far - older generation less sensitive to feelings of others)
“All things that we ordained festival Turn […] to black funeral” (does not take time to grieve, ceremony > child. Older gen more focused on preserving wealth)
“I defy you, stars!” (rejects commonly revered ideas of celestial imagery/fate, shows younger gen breaking away from faith to pursue passions)
