Q

How does Shakespeare do this?

A

By taking on the role of a trustworthy friend and caring individual towards Romeo. Additionally, he always attempts to placate the situation when it starts to become violent.

Q

Why does Shakespeare present him in this way?

A

Shakespeare includes a peacemaker in order to help the audience realise the all-encompassing negative effects of feuds. (?) Could also be used as a means to subvert male stereotypes through his willingness to take whatever actions necessary for the betterment of his friends (I.e. discussing emotions, walking away from conflict).
