Fear vs Anxiety
Fear: something tangible and immediate
Anxiety: intangible, psychologically terrifying
Panic Attack Specifier
An abrupt surge of intense fear or intense discomfort that reaches a peak within minutes, and during which time four (or more) of the following symptoms occur.
Note: The abrupt surge can occur from a calm state or an anxious state.
- Palpitations, pounding heart, or accelerated heart rate.
- Sweating.
- Trembling or shaking.
- Sensations of shortness of breath or smothering.
- Feelings of choking.
- Chest pain or discomfort.
- Nausea or abdominal distress.
- Feeling dizzy, unsteady, light-headed, or faint.
- Chills or heat sensations.
- Paresthesias (numbness or tingling sensations).
- Derealization (feelings of unreality) or depersonalization (being detached from oneself).
- Fear of losing control or “going crazy.”
- Fear of dying.
Panic Disorder
A. Recurrent unexpected panic attacks. (abrupt surge of fear or discomfort) with 4/11 symptoms
Attack followed for 1 month by either (1) concern about additional attacks and consequences, (2) maladaptive change related to attack
Not from substance or medical condition
Not another disorder (anxiety, trauma)
Panic Disorder Symptoms
4/11 symptoms

Agoraphobia
Fear or anxiety about 2/5 situations
Individual fears/avoids because worried can’t escape
situations always provoke fear/anxiety
avoid situations, go with companion, or suffer through
Out of proportion to actual danger
persistent, lasts 6 months
clinically significant distress and impairment
If have medical condition, this is excessive
Agoraphobia settings
- Using public transportation (e.g., automobiles, buses, trains, ships, planes).
- Being in open spaces (e.g., parking lots, marketplaces, bridges).
- Being in enclosed places (e.g., shops, theaters, cinemas).
- Standing in line or being in a crowd.
- Being outside of the home alone.
Specific disorder phobia
Fear about specific object or situation
always provokes fear
avoid the situation/object
fear is out of proportion
lasts for 6 months or more
causes significant distress/impairment

Social Anxiety Disorder
fear about social situations where could be scrutinized by other

Generalized Anxiety Disorder
excessive anxiety and worry (occurring more days than not for 6 months) about multiple things

GAD symptoms

Restlessness or feeling keyed up or on edge.
Being easily fatigued.
Difficulty concentrating or mind going blank.
Irritability.
Muscle tension.
Sleep disturbance (difficulty falling or staying asleep, or restless, unsatisfying sleep).
Separation Anxiety Disorder
Developmentally inappropriate and excessive fear or anxiety about separation, with 3/8 symptoms
Fear is persistent, 6 moths for adults 4 weeks for kids

Distress when anticipating or experiencing separation
Worry about losing attachment figure
worry about experiencing event that causes separation (kidnapped)

Selective Mutism
Failure to speak when expectation for speaking
disturbance interferes with work and communication
duration is at least 1 month
Failure to speak not from lack of knowledge
not better explained by communication disorder
OCD
presence of obsessions, compulsions or both (see definitions next slide)
O/C are time consuming, cause clinically significant distress/impairment
O/C not from drugs or medical condition
not better explained by another mental disorder
