Pearson (1983)
references to youth as a distinct social group can be found much earlier in the 19th century, youth culture is usually associated with post world war society.
Willis (1990)
although groups such as memos and goths are clearly different from each other, they all share similarities of being distinct social groups who are clearly visible and different to ‘ordinary youth’.
Becker (1963)
used by Interractionist theories. Becker proposes that some social groups are more likely than others to be seen as different of deviant, especially if the norms and values they follow differ from those held by the majority group in society.
Hodkinson (2004)
interviewed goths as part of an ethnographic study into subculture, found that music was a key attraction to goth culture. A number commented of first being attracted to scene by bands such as Cure and Sisters of Mercy in 1980s.
Thornton (1995) social construction
claims the media are largely responsible for the creation of youth culture and uses the concept of subcultural capital to explain who young people gain knowledge and experience of theory subcultures which brings with it high status.
