fewer vs less than
- I am studying fewer subjects than my classmates is correct
- I am studying less subjects incorrect
(if was only one - it would be I am studying one less subject)
discrete vs discreet
practice vs practise
Discreet means careful or intentionally unobtrusive. Discrete means distinct or unconnected.
e.g. there were a discrete series of events that led to his sacking.
e.g. we must be extremely discreet because my wife suspects something.
As pianists, they have to practise six hours a day. (verb - doing word)
Without practice you won’t improve your spelling skills. (noun - a thing/person/object)
effect vs affect
Affect is a verb / doing word
(e.g. I affected his feelings) (the weather affected his mood)
Effect = not a verb / change resulting from something happening
(“has a huge effect on our lives”)
(“effect of climate change”)
active vs passive voice
Active: “The court dismissed the appeal”
Passive: “The appeal was dismissed by the court”
the cat sat on the mat = active
seller will be paid = passive
use active. cos passive doesn’t create legal obligations.
shall in first person vs third person
First person, shall looks to the future
Second and third person, will looks to the future
e.g. “I shall probably go shopping”.
“We will go shopping”
(makes sense - u wouldn’t say we will go shopping. would say I shall go shopping)
First person
- will = determination
Second/third person
- shall = determination or obligation
e.g. “I will make you to do this”
e.g. “The buyer shall / we shall pay £500”
Example:
- ‘The tenant will paint the interior of the property every five years.’
This is intended to create an obligation, but the use of will in the third person conveys intention (so tenant doesn’t have to). Should say ‘shall’, or even BETTER ‘must’.
don’t use either if using or
