General Wave Properties Flashcards
Waves/ Wave Motion
A periodic motion repeated at regular intervals which transfer energy from one point to another without any transfer of matter.
Oscillation
A complete to-and-fro motion from one extreme position to the other extreme position, and back.
Crest & Trough
Crest: highest point of a tranverse wave
Trough lowest point of a tranverse wave
Wavefront
An imaginary line joining all points on the waves that are in phase.
Phase
Any two points are in phase when they move in the same direction and have the same speed and displacement from the rest position
Wavelength
Shortest distance between any two points that are in phase on a wave
Amplitude
Maximum displacement of a particle from the rest position in a wave
Period
Time taken for one complete oscillation
Frequency
Number of complete oscillations per unit time.
f=1/T
General Wave Equation
v=f lambda
Properties of waves
- Transfer energy from one point to another without any transfer of matter
- Undergo reflection and refraction
- Obey the Wave Equation
Transverse Wave
A wave where the direction of the vibration of the particles is perpendicular to the direction of propogation of the wave
Eg: EM waves
Longitudinal waves
Wave where the direction of the vibration of the prticles is parallel to the direction of propogation of the wave
Eg: Sound waves
When a wave travel from deep to shallow water
The wavelength shortens, since frequency remains unchanged (determined by dipper), the speed will be lower and hence the wave will bend towards the normal.
