General Vocabulary Flashcards
CNC
Computer Numerical Control
Bit Depth
The resolution of color or sound that is stored in an audio or video file.
Resolution
of pixels in X & Y direction
Frame Rate
Frames you see in a second
Bit Rate
Data throughput per second when sound is played back.
Sampling
A part of the conversion from analog sound or video to digital. Involves taking snapshots of an a/v signal at very fast intervals.
Raster
Media type, made up of small squares or pixels. Can scale up, cannot increase resolution.
Vector
Media type that is easily scalable. Graphics are stored as mathematical lines or paths.
Cutting
Laser burns through completely, usually vector files.
Engraving
Remove incremental levels of materials. Typically raster files.
Kerf
Measurable dimension of material removed by the cutting tool. Not straight on thicker material that is laser cut, is wider at the top.
Voltage
Electrical pressure or the difference in electrical potential between two points.
Dither
Intentionally applied form of noise to prevent color banding on images. Used in digital audio and video data and converting grayscale to black and white.
Quantization
Process of mapping input values from a large set (often continuous) to output values in a smaller, often finite number of elements. Ex. Rounding, truncation.
What is HD resolution?
1920 x 1080, or 1080p. 1080 rows high.
