Allegory
Rhetorical device that creates a close comparison. E.g. Comparing Britain to a hive suggests that they both have Queens, workers and soldiers.
Colloquial
Informal language used in conversation.
Denouement
Culmination or result of an action, plan or plot.
Foreground
To emphasise or make prominent.
Hyperbole
Use of exaggeration for effect.
Intertextuality
The many ways in which texts can be interrelated.
Meta
From the Greek meaning of ‘above or beyond’
Metaphor
Comparison that creates a direct correspondence.
Narrator/ Narrative voice
Conveys a story. E.g First person narrator, third person narrator, an unreliable narrator, omniscient narrator.
Oxymoron
Where two opposite words or meanings are used side by side e.g. ‘sour sweet’
Parody
Reducing of another text to ridicule by hostile imitation.
Pathetic Fallacy
Use of setting, scenery or weather to mirror the mood of a human activity - technique used to make sure the readers or audience’s feelings are moved.
Poetic Justice
The trapper is caught by the trap in an example of an ironic but apt justice.
Point of view
An opinion.
Reportage
Inclusion of documentary material, or material which purports to be a documentary, in a text.
