Q

what is lung volume reduction surgery?

A

-a surgery in which some of the diseased lung tissue is removed - done in cases where medications and rehab is not working on a patient suffering from emphysema, COPD etc

Q

what is important to note about the op notes for physio?

A

-what was done
-why was it done
-how long was the surgery
-any intra op events
-estimated blood loss - fatigue etc

6
Q

why is pain management important to manage post op?

A

-minimise secondary unwanted physiological effects eg tachycardia
-minimise secondary resp dysfunction
-minimise sec psychological distress
-allow pt to start rehab

7
Q

what are the key physio pain management points for assessment?

A

-always assess the adequacy of pain relief before treatment
-always check vital signs RR, BP, HR sats
-check motor and sensory function of lower limbs before mobilising if someone had epidural
-always liaise with medical and nursing staff before treating a pt

9
Q

what are the affects of general anaesthetic on patients lungs?

A

-reduced muscle tone and reduced lung volume
-reduced much-cilary clearance (cilia on airway)
reduced compliance & increased resistance

Q

what are common resp post op problems?

A

-atelectasis (not complication)
-ineffective cough - due to incision and pain

Q

list surgical risk factors for PPC?

A

-duration of anaesthetic
-type of surgery eg abdominal, neck, thoracic, etc

17
Q

what are the treatment options for the common problems for post op resp patients?

A

-positioning
-education eg supported cough and pain management
-breathing exercises
-mobilising

18
Q

what are reasons why a cough can be ineffective?

A

-pain
-decreased abdominal contraction
-decreased tidal volume
-thicker secretions that are hard to clear

19
Q

what are examples of precautions with mobilising resp / general surgical patients?

A

-what was done and where will the pt be sore?
-drips and drains?
-do I have enough people?
-risk assessment - BP, sensory and motor control?
-adverse events - blood loss etc
