General strategies to control pollution Flashcards
CPA , critical pathway analysis
-predicts the movement of potential pollutants , mostly used for radioactive waste
CGM , critical group monitoring
-Assessing the risk of public exposure to pollutants and those most at risk
-not normally used to detect damage to health
-Assess risks before health impacts
Emission control
-location such as not being near marine discharges or downwind of urban areas
-Timing to prevent , tide going out low tide , temperature inversion times
2 Principles of pollution control
-polluter pays , so whoever causes pollution will pay for it , this works if polluter has low chance of escaping their responsibilities and can be enforced through fines
-Precautionary principle , assumes waste will cause pollution until research confirms it wont , this is safer than hoping for the best and releasing not analysed waste
