general science (science folder) Flashcards
what materials are abundant in the crust?
oxygen and silicon
what does the mantle contain?
oxygen and silicon
what metals make up most of the earth’s core?
90% iron and 10% nickel
what are the five physical layers of the earth?
lithosphere, asthenosphere, mesosphere, outer core, and inner core (respectively)
outermost physical layer of the earth • physically cool and solid • made up of the crust and small part of the mantle
lithosphere
physically hot and semiliquid • often having plasticity • made of the thin part of the upper mantle • responsible of the movement of plates in the lithosphere
asthenosphere
rest of the mantle • hot and solid
mesosphere
physically hot and liquid • determined by the direction a compass points
outer core
physically is extremely hot and solid • pressure from the other layers makes it solid
inner core
what is the term for semi-liquid condition?
plasticity
why is the outer core liquid, since it’s one of the deeper locations of the earth?
because of it’s location, the extremely hot temperature making it liquid
innermost layer of the earth • located at the hottest part, the earth’s interior • stays solid because of the intense amount of pressure on top of the layer
inner core
