o Authoritarian or paternalistic relationship

Describe authoritarian/paternalistic relationships
Authoritarian or paternalistic relationship: the physician uses all of the authority inherent in his/her status and the patient has no autonomy. The patient tries hard to please the doctor and has does not actively participate in their own treatment.
Describe guidance/cooperation
The physician still exercises much authority and the patient is obedient, but has a greater feeling of autonomy and participates somewhat more actively in the relationship.
Describe a mutual participation relationship
Joint decision making between doctor ad patient, greater patient choice/autonomy

One that cannot be answered with yes or no, often expressed as a statement

Simple and straight to the point

One answered with just yes or no
Describe a leading question
One that suggests the particular answer or contains the information the questioner is looking to have confirmed

take some information you have gathered and ask them a question about it to allow patient to reflect on it, show that you have been listening, and help you to focus on determining the exact needs of your patient
