General Pathology Flashcards
Causes of cellular injury?
Most common cause is hypoxia (m/c is ischemia)
Most severe is ischemia
Radiation
Drugs
Infection
Autoimmune disorder
Nutritional disease
Genetic factors
Most sensitive to hypoxia
Least sensitive to hypoxia?
Most: neurons
Least: skeletal muscles / fibroblasts
Factors affecting cell injury?
Type of cell
Metabolic state of cell
Duration of injury
Type of injury
Cellular responses to injury?
Cellular adaptation
Reversible cellular injury
Irreversible cellular injury
Cellular death
Intracellular accumulation
Pathological calcification
Hypertrophy mechanism, examples?
Increased cell size due to increased synthesis of protein
Occurs in permanent or non dividing cells
Physiological: uterine myometrium during pregnancy, breast during lactation, skeletal muscle in bodybuilding
Pathological: LVH,Bladder obstruction lead to proximal hypertrophy
