General Paeds Flashcards
Define the term Neonate
From birth to 28 days
What formula would you use to estimate a child’s weight?
( Age + 4) x 2 = weight in kg
How much 10 % glucose to you give neonates?
Day 1 - 60 mls/kg/day
Day 2 - 90 mls/kg/day
Day 3 - 120 mls/kg/day
Day 4 - 150 mls/kg/day until 28 days
How much of each electrolyte do u give neonates? Na+? K+? Ca2+?
From day 2
Na+ = 3 mmol/kg/day
K+ = 2 mmol/kg/day
Ca 2+ = 1 mmol/kg/day
How do you calculate maintenance fluids rate in older children?
Per day =
100 mls/kg/day for first 10kg
50 mls/kg/day for next 10kg
20 mls/kg/day for every kg after that
Per hr = 4 mls/kg/day for first 10kg
2 mls/kg/day for next 10kg
1 mls/kg/day for every kg after that
How do u calculate the fluid deficit for children that are dehydrated or shocked?
Dehydrated = 50 mls/kg extra per day Shocked = 100 mls/kg extra plus a fluid bolus
What is a fluid bolus?
20 mls/kg 0.9% NaCl
Administered quickly with a syringe through a cannula
