General Organization of the Central Nervous System Lobes 2 Flashcards
What are the 3 external gyri of the temporal lobe?
What are the 2 internal sulci and gyrus of the temporal lobe?
Superior temporal gyri
Middle temporal gyri
Inferior temporal gyri.
Occipitotemporal gyrus
Occipitotemporal sulcus
Collateral sulcus.
Temporal functions
What is the fuction of the primary auditory cortex?
Initial auditory sensory input
What is the importance and side of residence of Wernicke’s Area?
Comprehension of language.
Left hemisphere.
Much of th temporal lobe, especially the inferior surface is…
involved with higher order processing of visual information.
The medial side of the temporal lobe is…
involved in complex aspects of learning and memory. (Occipitotemporal gyrus)
Where is the occipital lobe located and what is its primary responsibility?
Back of the cortex.
Primary area responsible for vision and for the coordination of eye movements.
What are the borders of the occipital lobe?
Laterally; Imaginary line of parietooccipital sulcus to the preoccipital notch
Medially; Parietooccipital sulcus and line from the preoccipital notch to the splenium of the corpus callosum.
What is the unusual name of the occipital lobe primary visual cortex?
V-1
Brodmann’s area 17
What are the 3 general functions of the occipital lobe?
Integrates movements in focusing the eye.
Correlating visual images with previous visual experiences and other sensory stimuli
Conscious perception of vision
Limbic Lobe Borders
A strip of cortex encircling the junction of the telencephalon/diencephalon (from a midline sagital view.)
Starting anteriorly, its inner border is with the Corpus Callosum and the Callosasl sulcus. Its outer border is the cingulate sulcus and continues with the subparietal sulcus and circluing in an imaginary arc to the collateral suclus inferiorly with the temporal lobe border.
What 2 gyri make up the Limbic Lobe?
Cingulate Gyrus
Parahippocampal Gyrus
What are the 3 functions of the Limbic Lobe?
Emotional Response
Drive-related Behavior
Memory
Explain the Hippocampus’s relationship to the Limbic system. 2
Hippocampus is functionally a part fo the limbic system although not a part of the limbic lobe.
A lot of short term memory.
(The hippocampus is folded into the temporal lobe at the hippocampal sulcus)
What is the primary and 2 other functions of the Insular Lobe?
Monitor’s the body’s perception of its physiological states and needs.
Memory
Integration of other cerebral activities
What is the Cranial Nerve that does not go to the thalamus?
Olfactory Nerve
