General Organisation Of Head And Neck Flashcards
What are the two sections of the cranium (skull)?
Neurocranium and viscerocranium
What nerve supplies the muscles of mastication?
Mandibular branch of the trigeminal nerve
What nerve up poles the muscles of facial expression?
Facial nerve
What are the five branches of the facial nerve?
Temporal Zygomatic Buccal Marginal mandibular Cervical
Which gland does the facial nerve pass through?
The parotid gland
What are the three branches of the trigeminal nerve?
Opthalmic, maxillary, mandibular
What muscle in the neck is found within the superficial cervical fascia?
Platysma
What forms the floor of the posterior triangle?
The scalene muscles
What muscle elevates the shoulders?
Trapezius
What structures can be found within the posterior triangle?
External jugular vein, brachial plexus trunks, subclavian artery/vein and omohyoid muscle
What are the boundaries of the carotid triangle?
Medially: superior belly of omohyoid
Superiorly: posterior belly of digastric
laterally: SCM
Why is the carotid triangle triangle important clinically?
The carotid sheath and its contents are within it and ready accessible as not covered over by SCM
What are the branches of the external carotid artery? (some anatomists like freaking out poor medical students)
Superior thyroid, ascending pharyngeal, lingual, facial, occipital, posterior auricular, maxillary, superficial temporal
