Anatomy Of The Nose And Paranasal Air Sinuses Flashcards
What are the main functions of the nose and nasal cavity?
Olfaction, warming and humidifying air, drainage of secretions
Which bones contribute to the external nose?
Nasal bones and frontal processes of maxilla
What are the three divisions of the nasal cavity?
Vestibule, respiratory region, olfactory region
What are nasal conchae?
Curved shelves of bone projecting out of the lateral walls of the nasal cavity
What are pathways for air called that are created by the conchae?
Meatuses
What is the function of the conchae?
Increase surface area of the nasal cavity and slows flow of air, so increases amount of air it can come into contact with and amount of time it spends in nasal cavity
Where do the frontal, maxillary and anterior ethmoid also sinuses drain into to enter the nasal cavity?
Middle meatus (inferior to middle conchae)
What structures drain into the nasal cavity?
Para nasal sinuses, nasolacrimal duct, Eustachian tube
Where is epistaxis most likely to take place within the nose?
Kiesselbach area (anterior third of nasal cavity)
What happens in a septal haematoma?
Injury to nose can shear blood vessels, blood accumulates sub-perichondrium depriving underlying cartilage of its blood supply from perichondrium
How would you manage a septal haematoma?
Aspirate and apply tamponade
What deformity can result from inadequate treatment of a septal haematoma?
Saddle-nose deformity
Which cranial nerve carries general sensation from the nasal cavity?
Trigeminal nerve
Which divisions of the trigeminal nerve supply the external nose and nasal cavity?
External nose is opthalmic division (via nasociliary nerve). Nasal cavity is maxillary division (via nasopalatine nerve)
What cells are found in the respiratory division of the nasal cavity?
Pseudostratified columnar ciliated epithelia and goblet cells
