General Organisation Head And Neck session1 Flashcards
Which joint connects the neurocranium to the viserocranium?
Temporomandibular joint
Nerve to nuscles of facial expression
Facial nerve - cranialnerve7
Nerve to muscles of mastication
Canial nerve 5 - branch of trigeminal nerve
Five key extra cranial branches of facial nerve
Temporal, zygomatic, buccal, marginal mandibular, cervical
What could inflammation of the parotid gland be caused by?
Mumps but if paired with facial nerve problems could be cancer
Three key branches of trigeminal nerve/ cranial nerve 5
- Va ophthalmic division (to above nostrils, mid scalp)
- Vb maxillary division (nostrils to top lip)
-Vc mandibular (bottom lip, side of face)
Sensory nerve to face ^^
Also motor nerve to MOM
3 blood vessels of head and neck anatomy and muscle between
External jugular vein - sternocleiomastoid - internal JV face - common carotid artery (becomes internal and external face)
5 cartilages and glands in neck
Hyoid bone - thyroid cartilage - cricoid cartilage - thyroid gland - trachea
7 muscles of facial expression and action
POO ZORB
Risorius - pulls corners of mouth laterally
Zygomaticus - draws angles of mouth laterally and superiorly
Orbicularis oculi - closes eyelids (palpebral) / squeezes shut (orbital part)
Orbicularis oris - brings lips together/ purses
Platysma- depresses angles mouth
Occipitofrontalis- elevates eyebrows, wrinkles forehead
Buccinators - keep cheeks taut
4 muscles of mastication and actions
Temporalis- elevates mandible, retracts jaw
Masseter- elevates mandible
Medial pterygoid- elevates mandible, protrudes
Laaaateral pterygoid- depresses mandible (+suprahyoids), protrudes
6 muscles of neck and actions
PST sing it, sing!
Platysma- tenses skin
Sternocleiomastoid- rotates head contralateral side and laterally flexes neck
Trapezius- elevates shoulders, rotates shoulders when arm abducted >90
Suprahyoid group- elevates hyoid, depress mandible
Infrahyoid group- depress hyoid, stabilise
Scalene (A/P/M) - accessory respiration
Borders of posterior triangle
SCM, trapezius, clavicle
Borders of anterior triangle
SCM, mandible, imaginary middline
Borders of carotid triangle
SCM, omohyoid superior belly, digastric posterior belly
Contents of carotid sheath
IJV, common carotid artery, vagus nerve
