General Operations Flashcards
List the 4 different ways to find out the weight of a load.
1) Obtain the consignment or weigh ridge notes
2) Weigh the load
3) Calculate the load weight
4) Read the packaging
How can you calculate the weight of a load?
(Number of items) x (weight of each item) + (pallet weight)
What does “Load Centre Distance” mean?
The distance from the back rest/her of the fork to the centre of gravity of the load.
Name 6 causes of forward instability.
1) Driving over uneven surfaces
2) Unevenly distributed load
3) Driving too fast
4) Driving with the lord in the elevated position
5) Operating on sloping surfaces
6) Overloading
Name 6 causes of lateral instability.
1) Driving over uneven surfaces
2) Unevenly distributed load
3) Driving too fast
4) Driving with the load in the elevated position
5) Operating on sloping surfaces
6) Turning with the load raised
What two actions should you take if the forklift truck is rolling over sideways?
1) Remain in the forklift
2) Brace yourself until the forklift is stationary and it is safe to exit
List 4 things you can do if your view is obstructed:
1) Check the pathway is clear
2) Check the mirrors
3) Look over both shoulders if reversing
4) Use warning devices
5) Use a guide
Why should your seatbelt be worn at all times?
To prevent being thrown out in the event of a rollover or collision
What would happen if you were to pick up a load using only one fork?
The stability of the forklift would be affected and you may damage he fork arm.
How low should a load be carried?
At axle height or as low as the load permits
When stacking loads on top of the other, make sure:
1) The loaf is stacked on a firm and level surface
2) Heavier goods are placed at the bottom of the stack
3) That the rack does not become unstable
Why should you never turn a forklift on a ramp or sloping surface?
It affects the stability of the forklift and the forklift may rollover.
What should be in place between the truck and loading dock before loading?
The bridge plate or docking plate
Why should forks be centered before moving?
To ensure that the forklift is stable, I.e to maintain stability
How does an increase in the load centre distance affect the capacity of a forklift?
It lowers the capacity
What is likely to happen if the centre of gravity of the loaded forklift moves forward of the fulcrum?
The forklift will tip over
Why should load movement be constantly monitored?
To ensure safety to people, load and structural stability. “For safe operation”.
When you drive a loaded forklift up a ramp, which way should the load be facing?
Forward, up the ramp
Give 2 reasons why it is unsafe to turn a loaded forklift on a ramp or sloping surface?
1) The forklift could tip over
2) You could lose the load
Why are you not allowed to raise or lower the forklift load near or over people?
It puts the people at risk of serious injury or death.
When are you allowed to carry passengers on a forklift?
Only when the forklift is designed and equipped to do so by the manufacturer.
Why is it dangerous to turn a forklift with the load raised?
It negatively affects the stability of the forklift.
Give 2 reasons why you should not lift a load with only 1 fork.
1) It negatively affects the forklift stability
2) You could damage the fork
A pallet seems to be uneven loaded. What should you do before attempting to lift it?
Safely re-pack the load.
Which vehicles should you give way to or give right of way to during emergencies?
All emergency vehicles
If the kid is not back against the heel of the fork and backrest what effect does it have on the forklift?
It reduces the capacity of the forklift
