General Leaf Form Flashcards
-Flat, broad part of the leaf (contains veins).
-Main site of photosynthesis and gas exchange.
Blade (aka Lamina)
-Join the leaf to a stem node.
-Supports the blade and transports water, nutrients, and food.
Petiole (the Stalk)
-a tubular structure formed at the base of the leaf that encircles the stem.
Leaf Sheath
-Are the first leaves that appear on a seedling when it germinates.
-Provide nutrients until the true leaves develop, which take over the main photosynthetic duties.
Cotyledons (seed leaf)
-1 cotyledon
- Leaf venation: parallel veins
-Leaf shape: longer & slender blades
-Flower parts: multiple of 3
-Root system: Fibrous roots (many thin roots)
Monocot (Monocotyledons)
2 cotyledons
Leaf venation: multi-branched network of major veins (reticulate venation)
Leaf shape: palmate
Flower parts: multiples of 4 or 5
Root system: Taproot (a large central root)
Dicot (Dicotyledons)
