Episcleritis vs scleritis

A

Episcleritis

  1. acute onset
  2. mild irritation
  3. young patients, often w/o systemic disease
  4. Tx topical lubricants, NSAIDs

Scleritis

  1. Subacute redness, diffuse
  2. Severe pain
  3. +/- visual impairment
  4. elderly, with systemic disease (~50%)
  5. Tx eval underlying disease, topical steroids +/- immunosuppressant therapy
