What are the three levels of government?
Federal, State, Local
What are the four types of democracy?
Constitutional, Direct, Monitory, Representative.
What is democracy?
A system of government where the people have a say. This way the people often get what they want. Australia is a constitutional and representative democracy.
What are the federal governments responsibilities? (4)
Raises money to run the country by collecting tax on incomes, goods and services and company profits, and spends it on national matters: for example, trade, defence, immigration, and the environment.
What are the state governments responsibilities? (5)
Raises money from taxes but receives money from federal government and spends it on state/territory matters: for example, schools, housing, hospitals, roads and railways, police and ambulance services.
What are the local councils responsibilities? (5)
Collect taxes from local property owners and receive grants from federal and state/territory governments and spends on local matters: for example, town planning, rubbish collection, water and sewerage, local roads and pet control.
What is parliamentary government?
Government formed from the elected members of parliament. The political party that has the majority of representatives in the lower house has the right to form government.
Describe the federal parliament.
The federal parliament is the uppermost level of government. It is made up of the House of Representatives and the Senate. It’s leader is the Prime Minister. They are in charge of the running of our country.
Describe the state/territory parliament.
The State/Territory parliament is the middle level of government. It is made up of the legislative assembly and the legislative council. It’s leader is the Premier. They are in charge of state/territory matters.
Describe the local councils.
The local councils are the lowest level of government. The leader is the Mayor. They are in charge of local matters.
