General Flight Operations Flashcards

1
Q

What is the cold soaking phenomenon?

A

The fuel in the wings is very cold, either from being fueled in a a cold place or from flying at high altitude.

When it descends into a warm area with high humidity, condensation ice can form.

Q

Where do downdrafts occure in mountain areas?

A

On the shaded side. Fly in the sunny side where updrafts are more common

Q

What performance figure becomes very important when it comes to mountain flying?

A

Density Altitudes, which our AC performance figures are all based on

Q

What is the CRFI (Canadian Runway Friction Index)

A

A measurement used to indicate how slippery a runway is.

  • 1.0 indicates a perfect dry runway
  • 0.1 to 0.3 indicates a slippery runway

CFS has convertion landing distances

Q

What do VASI and PAPI stand for?

A

VASI - Visiaul Approach Slope Indicator System (older, being phased out, comes in two and three bar types)

PAPI - Precision Approach Path Indicatior (comes in two or four light system)

These are both sets of lights 1000 ft fro the threshold that indicated a 3 degree approach angle

Q

On a 3-bar VASI system, what is the single light on the upwind (top) side for?

A

For larger AC. Small AC should disregard this light.

Q

What are the lighting requirements for runways?

A

Two paralle rows of white lights, spaced not more than 200ft apart, with a minimum length of 1377ft for each row.

Q

How do you recover when encountering Decreased Performance Shear?

A

On Approach: Full power, set air speed to max rate of climb. Then decrease to a lower setting than before the shear was encountered to aintain a constant airspeed and approach angle

On Departure: adjust attitude to best rate of climb **airspeed*
