General Engineering Knowledge Flashcards
What is complete and incomplete combustion?
Complete combustion is when hydrocarbon is burnt in the presence of oxygen to produce water and carbon dioxide.
During incomplete combustion, carbon monoxide is produced instead of carbon dioxide due to insufficient oxygen.
In motor vehicles, if combustion is clean, only CO2 and water should come out of the exhaust pipe. But if it is incomplete, then pollutant emissions like unburnt hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide will also be released.
What is the key difference between diesel and petroleum engines?
To create a fire, you need fuel, oxygen and heat.
Petrol engines use spark plugs to create the heat, while diesel engines rely solely on heavily compressed air as the source of heat.
What are the 3 elements required for a fire?
Fuel
Oxygen
Heat
What is the circumference of the Earth?
40, 000 km
