How do I get to know my people as a new manager?
Start one-on-ones right away. This is nothing new and here are the reasons why:
- Investing in the team
- Listening to their concerns.
- Getting to know them personally.
- Hearing what they want from the boss.
- Making sure you understand the culture.
- Get a handle on talent and performance.
- Getting know strengths and weaknesses. This is something that every boss would do well to meet their directs on a regular basis (weekly).

When starting as a new manager what should you not do in your one-on-ones?
- Do not start feedback, coaching, or delegation.
- Do not change the staff meeting, reports, etc. The priority is getting to know your staff.
- Avoiding using role power at the cost of the relationship. Build relationships and credibility first.
