general characteristics Flashcards
Prokaryotic or Eukaryotic?
Prokaryotic
Do they all have cell walls? What are the cell walls made of?
Most bacteria have cell walls.
The cell walls are made up of protein and carbs NOT cellulose like a plant
Unicellular or Multicellular
Most are Unicellular (some are colonial)
Reproduction?
Asexual (binary fission)
Binary fission is when one individual cell splits into two and the DNA copies itself right before division, giving each new bacterium its own copy.
Nutrition?
Absorption
Most bacteria are heterotrophic, some are photosynthetic & chemosynthetic
How do they move?
Vary in their type of movement (use flagella)
Habitat?
Autotrophic
Heterotrophic
Saprophytic
Parasitic
How do bacteria survive in harsh conditions?
By forming dormant or resting cells known as Endospores (very resistant bacterial spores)
Order of growth curve
hint: LAESSD
- lag
- acceleration
- exponential
- slowing
- stationary
- death
Graph rises until 4, goes flat until 6, then drops.
