What are the pay entitlements for initial military training (IMT) / initial employment training (IET) and once fully qualified?
Salary during recruit training is $1289 per fortnight
Salary during initial employment training is $1474 per fortnight
This also includes $357 trainee allowance per fortnight and $419 per year for uniform maintenance.
Salary once training is completed is $1727 per fortnight plus and additional $477 per fortnight service allowance, this will increase with experience and rank.

What is • Operational Service
Being part of the ADF may require deployment oversea into war zones, additionally in peace time ADF members may be deployed oversea into areas of risk in situations such as natural disasters.
What is the • Defence Force Discipline Act
ADF members are subject to both civilian and military law and discipline systems.
What is the • Military Discipline System
Includes officer discipline, Summary Authority Trials, Defence Force Magistrate and Court Martial.
What is • Unrestricted Service
ADF members must be able to provide unrestricted service allowing for deployment across Australia and overseas. The candidate cannot have criminal or civil convictions that would hinder this free movement.
What is the Serrvice Allowance
Is provide to members to compensate for shift work, long and irregular hours. There is no guarantee that these will be compensated for.
What about Interdependent relationships and partner’s employment.
Applications can be made to recognise relationships and benefits including removals and subsidised housing and be provide.
Military and Trade Skills Compentancy
ADF members are required to maintain a level of competency in the requirements to perform their duties.
Postings and deployments
ADF member often face having to move multiplied times around Australia and outside Australia. This is due to the need to fill vacancies and react to developing situations.
Medical and Physical Fitness
Members are required to maintain good health and fitness. Members must pass regular physical assessment, failure to do so may result in discharge from the ADF.
• HIV and other Viral Testing
On successful entry I will be tested for HIV and other Viral and STI’s.
• Dress and Grooming
ADF members must maintain good dress and grooming and reflect the standards of society.
• Body embellishment restrictions
Army Recruits are not permitted tattoos on the face, scalp ears, neck and hands. Tattoo’s and brands must not be offensive or obscene.
• Regulation on lifestyle
ADF members must conduct themselves is a matter that is acceptable to society and the military. What may be acceptable in society may not be so in the military.
• Equity, Diversity and unacceptable behaviour
Discrimination, harassment and unacceptable behaviour is not acceptable in the ADF and may warrant disciplinary or administrative action.
• Drugs and drug testing
Use of illicit drugs or abuse of prescription or other drugs in not acceptable. Members of the ADF will often undergo drug testing. Positive results may be grounds for dismissal.
• Performance Appraisal System
ADF members will undergo performance appraisal for the duration of their career in the ADF. The system is used to set goals for the members and recognise both good and poor performance. In regard to poor performance there will be options available to correct this.
• Return of Service Obligation
Members who receive undergraduate training or study are expected to serve a specified period before they can leave.
• Training Failure
Failure in training may result in retraining or dismissal from the ADF.
• Leave Entitlements
20 working days of leave is credited every 12 months of service, other types of leave can be credited for a number or reasons including arduous, special or prolonged duty.
• Long Service Leave
Long service leave is credited at 9 days per year and can be taken after 10 year, longer depended on circumstances.
• Annual leave free travel
A member with no partner or children may receive free travel back home to within Australia. Additionally members may be recalled from leave for service reasons.
• Medical and Dental
The ADF provide free medical and dental, however some restrictions on cosmetic surgery are not included.
• Accommodation Assistance
Members with partners or dependent may be eligible for Service Residences and rental assistance. Live in quarters are proved for single members however unless in some situations members are free to not use live-in quarters.
• Further Education for serving members
Members are able to undertake courses within the military to improve their education and professional training. Members are also eligible for Study assistance.
• Removals
As a consequence of postings removals to move belongings and personal effects of members and their family are done at the ADF’s expense.
• Posting Policy
As a member in the ADF there may be occasions were the members may have to be posted to different locations. Members preferences are considered and attempts are made to ensure that posting are of a period of three years.
