Where and how long is your initial employment training (IET)?
Initial employment training is conducted at Defence Force School of signals DFSS Macleod Victoria.
Training is in two parts first Common Corps Training 8 days in Duration, and communication Systems operator training 25 Weeks in Duration.
At the completion of training I will receive Certificate II in government and Certificate II in public safety.
What will you learn at IET
Common Corps Training involves learning basic skill in radio operation, line laying and computing.
Communication systems operator training includes learning how to operate and maintain a variety of communication equipment. Deploy computer networks and operate computer based communications programs.
What Further Training is required
After further training includes advanced operator training and training to Communications systems engineer.
What type of equipment might you use?
Communication equipment including HF and VHF radios and satellite communication equipment.

Where are the military bases that you may be posted to after training?
RA Sigs tactical and base support units in Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne, Darwin, Perth and Townsville

What are the main functions of the role you are applying for?
The duties of a communication systems operator is to provide communications capability for the Australian Army. They do this by deploying a variety of equipment from HF and UHF radios to satellite links. Communication systems operators can work out of many different environments.
What are the potential operating environments for your job role?
In the field 4x4’s and armoured vehicles, communication centres and command posts and even Navy vessels.
What are the employment conditions for this job role – positive and negative?
Maybe deployed into the field and battle zones in all conditions. Could also be posted to comfortable offices.
