General Anaesthetics Flashcards
Ether
First used in operations by Crawford Long. Its flammability and capacity to cause excessive vomiting were major drawbacks that led to the cessation of its use.
Etomidate
A more recent IV anaesthetic. It is metabolised more rapidly than thiopentone and are thus less likely to produce prolonged effects. It is useful for the induction of anaesthesia. Primary target is the GABA A receptor, causing prolongation of GABAergic IPSPs. `
Halothane
An inhalational general anaesthetic that has several potential targets: alpha subunit of the GABA A receptor, glycine receptors, TASK3 2PK+ channels
Nitrous Oxide
