Definition of Owner under Dog Control Act 1996
Anyone who owns a dog or has a dog in his/her possession
Dog Control Act 1996 specifies that owners must:
Register dog each yr
Microchip when first registered
Keep dog under control
Fenced in on own property/have under full control
Comply with council bylaws
Proper care of dog
Reasonable steps to ensure dog does not injure, endanger, intimidate or distress anybody or animal
Muzzle dog in public if menacing or dangerous
Offences under Dog Control Act 1996
- Attack of person, stock animal or domestic animal
- Rushing of person, animal or domestic animal
- Cause serious injury to person or protected wildlife
- Unmuzzled dangerous dog loose in public area
