Q

Contact Area

A

the small area on the mesial and distal surfaces of a tooth that touch an adjacent tooth they lie along the height of contour line and provide stability to the arch through the contact of the teeth

Q

Interdental Papilla

A

Projection of free gingival tissue occupying much of the interdental area
o in a healthy mouth the papilla forms a triangle shape from the facial view and resembles a “sagging tent” from the proximal view ( the sag is called the col, just beneath the contact area)

Q

Embrasures

A

v” shaped opening formed by the curved tooth surfaces that sweep away from the contact areas
o Allow chewed foods to escape from the occlusal surfaces
o Every contact area is flanked by 4 embrasures (Buccal, Lingual, Cervical, Occlusal; can see two at a time depending on your view)
o Discourage the impaction of food between teeth

Q

The incisocervical contact locations can be summarized by two rules

A

▪ 1) The more anterior the tooth, the more incisal/occlusal the proximal contacts
▪ 2) on any tooth (except the lower first premolar) the mesial contact area is more toward the incisal/occlusal than is the distal contact area

Q

In the anterior region, the facial and lingual embrasures have approximately equal

A

depths, meaning the contacts between anterior teeth are centered faciolingually

Q

In the posterior region, the lingual embrasures are deeper than the facial embrasures

A

deeper than the facial embrasures meaning the proximal contacts between posterior teeth are offset toward the facial surface
