General Flashcards
What is the CNS?
brain and spinal cord
What is the PNS?
spinal nerve that branch of spinal cord that innervate the entire body
What does the spinal cord do?
passes info between brain and PNS
acts as major reflex center for body below the head
What is the spinal cord continuous with superiorly?
the brainstem through the Foramen magnum of the skull
What are the regions that the spinal cord is divided?
5 regions Cervical thoracic lumbar sacral coccygeal
What are the spinal cord roots?
8 cervical 12 thoracic 5 lumbar 5 sacral 1 coccygeal
What carries info from the periphery toward the CNS to ascend the spinal cord to the brain?
Afferent neurons
What are the type of Afferent neurons?
first order afferent
second order afferent
What are first order afferent neurons?
peripheral sensory neurons whose body cell body lie in the dorsal root ganglia
What are second order afferent nerves?
cell bodies located in the gray matter within CNS
What are efferent Neurons?
carry info from brain to the periphery
What are the type of Efferent neurons?
lower motor neurons
upper motor neurons
What are lower motor efferent neurons?
cell bodied located in the ventral horn of gray matter and their axons terminate on effector organs of the periphery
What are upper motor efferent neurons?
efferent neurons tat descend the spinal cord to synapse on lower motor neurons
