external anatomy Flashcards
What is the shape of the spinal cord?
oval
width is greater than anterior posterior side
What are the grooves that run longitudinally along the spinal cord?
Ventral median fissure
dorsal median fissure (shallower than ventral median fissure)
ventral lateral sulci
dorsal lateral sulci
What arises from ventral lateral and dorsal lateral sulci?
Ventral lateral sulci -anterior spinal nerve roots
dorsal lateral sulci - posterior spinal nerve roots
How is the spinal cord divided?
into left and right hemispheres by a artificial line that connects the anterior median fissure and the posterior median sulcus
Where does the spinal cord lie in the vertebral canal?
in the superior 2/3
it is continuous with the brainstem superiorly threw the foramen magnum
where does the spinal cord terminate in the vertebral canal?
L1/L2 intervebral disk in in the Conus medularis in adults
What is the area below the conus medullaris?
lumbar cistern -
What does the lumber cistern contain?
cauda equina
CSF
internal filum terminale
What is the cervical enlargement?
parts of the spinal cord that is enlarged from C4-T1
anterior rami of C4-T1 which form the brachial plexus
What is the lumbar sacral enlargement?
region of spinal cord from T11- S1 spinal cord level
this forms lumbar plexus and sacral plexus
What is immediately below the lumbar sacral enlargement?
conus medullaris
