What is AAALAC’s shtick?
Private, nonprofit organization that promotes the humane treatment of animals in science through voluntary accreditation and assessment programs
When was AAALAC founded?
1965
What are AAALAC’s member organizations?
More than 70 prestigious scientific, educational, and professional organizations that serve as a House of Delegates that advise the Board of Directors. Member orgs appoint a representative to serve a three year term on the AAALAC Board
What does the program description include?
- Animal care and use program
- Animal environment, housing, and management
- Veterinary care
- Physical plant: Centrally-managed and satellite animal housing facilities
When is the AAALC Annual Report due?
Institution can chose from a variety of reporting periods, as long as it is continuous with previous reports
What is included in the annual report?
Protocol violations
Animal use not approved by IACUC
Protocol suspensions
Changes in facility size, location, and name
Change in IACUC composition or members
Other changes in animal care and use program
What information should be promptly reported to AAALAC?
Unexpected animal deaths
Natural disasters
Sig. animal rights activities
Inappropriate euthanasia techniques and/or failure to confirm euthanasia
Allegations/complaints/reports regarding animal welfare concerns
Lack of vet care
OLAW/USDA investigations
Changes in unit contact
Changes in facility size, location, and name if site visit is pending before Annual Report is to be submitted
What are the four outcomes of an initial site visit?
Award full accreditation
Award accreditation with condition - Correction of items in next Annual Report or at discretion of Council
Provisional status - Not accredited. Have up to 24 months to correct
Withhold accreditation - Not accredited, opportunity to appeal
What are the five outcomes of a AAALAC site visit of an already accredited institution?
Continued full accreditation
Conditional accreditation - Correction of items in next Annual Report or at discretion of Council
Deferred accreditation - Accredited. 2 months to correct mandatory items. Failure to fix results in probation
Probation - Accredited. Up to a total of 12 months to fix. Failure to fix results in revoking accreditation.
Revoke Accreditation - Can appeal, but not accredited during that time.
