What are the three primary standards used by AAALAC?
The Guide, Ag Guide, and ETS 123 (European Convention for the Protection of Vertebrate Animals Used for Experimental and Other Scientific Purposes, Council of Europe)
When would AAALAC not visit a contract site?
If the accredited org does not have ownership of the animals, but only owns the data/intellectual property.
Does AAALAC believe that programs should consider scientific rigor and experimental reproducibility when evaluating animal activities?
Yes
How often should vermin traps be checked?
Daily if live traps or lethal traps.
If the live traps provide food and water, IACUC should determine the appropriate frequency.
What does AAALAC state regarding perches and nest sites for adult laying hens?
Is recommended in the Ag Guide, but AAALAC considers industry-standard conventional cages to be acceptable.
What has AAALAC state regarding alcohol as a skin disinfectant and instrument sterilant?
Found that alcohol as a skin disinfectant was acceptable, but use for instrument prep was not, as alcohol is neither a sterilant or high-level disinfectant.
How does AAALAC view housing for agricultural species?
In accredited facilities, the housing and care for farm animals should meet the standards that prevail on a high-quality, well-managed farm
Are Suggestions for Improvement mandatory?

What type of administrative reports must be promptly reported to AAALAC?
Change in institutional ownership
Change in unit contact
Changes in facility size, location, name if site visit is pending before the Annual Report is submitted
Withdrawal from the accreditation program
What information does the Annual Report include?
Key personnel contact changes
Changes in physical areas supporting animal care and use
Actions taken in response to SFIs
Organizational structure changes
Animal usage
Protocol violations which had the potential to compromise animal welfare
Animal use not approved by IACUC or comparable oversight body
Sig. adverse events not previously reported as required by the Rules of Accreditation
What events should trigger an adverse event assessment and reporting plan?
One that results in negative consequences to animal welfare or human health
What adverse events can be reported in the AAALAC Annual Report?
Protocol violations which had the potential to compromise animal welfare
Animal use not approved by the IACUC
Adverse events not previously reported as required
What adverse events should be promptly reported?
Inadequate vet care
Conditions resulting in unexpected animal harm or deaths: Accidents or errors, equipment failure, natural disaster
Sig animal rights activities, including FOIA requests that include AAALAC documents
Inappropriate euthanasia techniques and/or failure to confirm euthanasia
Substantiated complaints or reports regarding animal welfare concerns
Internal or external reviews/inspections that document adverse events or noncompliance that resulted in animal harm or death
Human health issue directly related to the program
