South Africa
South Africa is a country at the southernmost tip of the African continent. As well as the country in which apartheid took place.
Apartheid
Apartheid was a system of institutionalized racial segregation that existed in South Africa from 1948 until the early 1990s.
Nelson Mandela
Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela was a South African anti-apartheid revolutionary, political leader and philanthropist who served as the first president of South Africa from 1994 to 1999. He was the country’s first black head of state and the first elected in a fully representative democratic election.
Ireland
The Republic of Ireland occupies most of the island of Ireland, the other part of the island is occupied by Northern Ireland. In the years through the 1960s to 1998 there was a conflict dubbed “The Troubles”, this conflict was between the Nationalists (“Irish”/Roman Catholic) who wished to part from the U.K. and the Unionists (“British”/protestant) who wished to stay a part of the U.K.
Northern Ireland
Northern Ireland is a part of the United Kingdom that is variously described as a country, province, territory or region. Located in the northeast of the island of Ireland, Northern Ireland shares a border to the south and west with the Republic of Ireland. In the years through the 1960s to 1998 there was a conflict dubbed “The Troubles”, this conflict was between the Nationalists (“Irish”/Roman Catholic) who wished to part from the U.K. and the Unionists (“British”/protestant) who wished to stay a part of the U.K.
“The Troubles”
“The Troubles” refers to the three-decade conflict between nationalists (mainly self-identified as Irish or Roman Catholic) and unionists (mainly self-identified as British or Protestant). The word “troubles” has been used as a synonym for violent conflict for centuries. The term was used to describe the Irish revolutionary period in the early twentieth century. It was subsequently adopted to refer to the escalating violence in Northern Ireland after 1969.
Multiculturalism
the presence of, or support for the presence of, several distinct cultural or ethnic groups within a society. Examples include the great European and Asian migrations of the mid 19th and early 20th centuries brought Chinese, Germans, Greeks, Irish, Italians, Japanese, Jews, and Poles to the United States. Or the British being present in South Africa.
cultural respect
Cultural Respect is the: recognition, protection and continued advancement of the inherent rights, cultures and traditions of different cultures. Cultural Respect is about shared respect.
cultural appropriation
the unacknowledged or inappropriate adoption of the customs, practices, ideas, etc. of one people or society by members of another and typically more dominant people or society.
