What is beneficence

A

doing good. Consider: will it resolve and is proportional to the problem? Is the outcome in line with patients expectation/treatment?

What is non-maleficence

A

to do no harm or allow harm through neglect. Consider: associated risks, do I posses the skills/knowledge required, is the patient being treated with dignity and respect, are they put at risks due to other factors?

What is autonomy

A

Giving the patient to choose freely where they are able. Are they actively involved in diagnosis and treatment? Explain advantages and disadvantages. Can patient evaluate/retain information? Has consent been provided?

What is justice

A

Ensuring fairness. Is it compatible with the law and patients rights? DOES NOT unfairly contradict human rights, prioritize one group over another . Can it be justified in terms of overall benefit to society.

A

Cystic fibrosis

A

Genetically inherited disease affecting the movement of salt and water out of the cell causing a build up of thick mucus particularly in the lungs. The cilia can not waft the mucus out of the cell causing the bacteria to remain in the lungs and being more susceptible to infections. Cilia is also damaged.

Cystic Fibrosis new drugs

A

Kaftrio became available to patients in the UK last year. It works on the protein CFTR (commonly dmaaged in CF patients and regulates movement of salt and water) Ivacaftor improves its function andtezacaftor increases the amount of protein. So mucus less sticky.

What are MDT

A

group of health and care staff who are members of different organisations and professions (e.g. GPs, social workers, nurses), that work together to make decisions regarding the treatment of individual patients and service users. MDTs are used in both health and care settings.
