General Flashcards
What is the difference between psychology and psychiatry?
Psychiatrists are medical doctors, psychologists are not. Psychiatrists prescribe medication, psychologists can’t. Psychiatrists diagnose illness, manage treatment and provide a range of therapies for complex and serious mental illness. Psychologists focus on providing psychotherapy (talk therapy) to help patients.
Independent Variable
The independent variable is the cause. Its value is independent of other variables in your study.
Example: If ‘Do tomatoes grow fastest under fluorescent, incandescent, or natural light?’
Then the independent variable is The type of light the tomato plant is grown under
Dependent Variable
The dependent variable is the effect. Its value depends on changes in the independent variable.
Example: If ‘Do tomatoes grow fastest under fluorescent, incandescent, or natural light?’
Then the dependent variable is the rate of growth of the tomato plant.
What are the three types of research designs?
Experimental, observational and qualitative.
Experimental Design
Observational Design
Qualitative Design
Random Allocation
Sample Size
the number of observations (cases, individuals, units) included in a selection of items to be studied.
Population
In statistics, a theoretically defined, complete group of objects (people, nonhuman animals, institutions) from which a sample is drawn to obtain empirical observations and to which results can be generalised
Representativeness
A representativeness heuristic is a cognitive bias in which an individual categorizes a situation based on a pattern of previous experiences or beliefs about the scenario. It can be useful when trying to make a quick decision but it can also be limiting because it leads to close-mindedness such as in stereotypes.
Validity
Validity is the main extent to which a concept, conclusion or measurement is well-founded and likely corresponds accurately to the real world.
Reliability
The term reliability in psychological research refers to the consistency of a research study or measuring test.
Types of Data
Objective Quantitative, subjective quantitative and qualitative data.
