Gene Therapy Flashcards
1
Q
What is transgenics?
A
‘The incorporation of foreign genes into an organisms DNA’.
2
Q
What is a transgenic animal?
A
- An animal which has has its DNA altered by the addition of a gene not normally found in that species.
- This usually occurs in embryos so a smaller number of cells need modifying.
3
Q
What is Gene pharming?
A
A mix of transgenic techniques and farming can be used to develop animals that produce proteins of medicinal or commercial value.
4
Q
What are some examples of transgenic animals?
A
Sheep; Milk contains a blood clotting factor.
Goat; Milk contains treatment for cystic fibrosis.
Cattle; Lack the prion protein responsible for BSE.
Pig; Lack the genes that lead to their organs being rejected during transplantation.
