What is a transgenic animal?

A
  • An animal which has has its DNA altered by the addition of a gene not normally found in that species.
  • This usually occurs in embryos so a smaller number of cells need modifying.

A

A mix of transgenic techniques and farming can be used to develop animals that produce proteins of medicinal or commercial value.

A

Sheep; Milk contains a blood clotting factor.
Goat; Milk contains treatment for cystic fibrosis.
Cattle; Lack the prion protein responsible for BSE.
Pig; Lack the genes that lead to their organs being rejected during transplantation.
