Gene Networks & Signal Transduction Flashcards
What must cells do to adapt to large environmental changes?
They must regulate LARGE batteries of OPERONS
We are groups of genes that are INDEPENDENTLY controlled as members of DIFFERENT operons, what must we do?
We must COOPERATE to accomplish some response to an environmental change
What happens to different subsets?
Some are turned ON while otheres are turned OFF. This is done simultaneously-yayyy, multi-tasking.
What do global regulatory systems do?
Regulated MANY virulence factors.
What is a REGULON?
A group of operons (also called global control system) subject to the control of a common (or global) REGULATOR
Step 1
Through the action of some sensor molecule, a cel sense a stimulus
Step 2
Sensor signals to activate/DEactivate a regulator
Step 3
regulator binds to several operons
Step 4
binding turns some ON and some OFF
Step 6
gene products respond to the original stimulus
Step 6
gene products exert FEEDBACK CONTROL on their own expression
Is gene regulation a commoner?
NO! It’s HEIRARCHICAL, bitchesss
The ToxR Regulon
one stimulus, many products-one of which: Cholera toxin (Ctx-Beta)
